Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions about our PDF tools, features, privacy, and more.

General Questions

Are PDF Tools really free?

Yes, absolutely! All our PDF tools are completely free to use with no hidden costs, subscription fees, or premium tiers. You get full access to all features without any limitations on file size, page count, or usage frequency.

We believe essential document tools should be accessible to everyone, which is why we've built PDF Tools to be genuinely free—no bait-and-switch tactics, no trial periods, and no feature locks. What you see is what you get, and it will always be free.

Do I need to create an account?

No account required! You can use all our PDF tools immediately without signing up, registering, or providing any personal information. Simply visit the tool you need and start processing your PDFs right away.

This approach ensures maximum privacy and convenience—there's no need to remember passwords or manage account settings.

Do I need to install any software?

No installation required! Our tools work directly in your web browser on any device—desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone. Simply visit our website and start processing PDFs immediately.

Everything runs using modern web technologies (HTML5, JavaScript, CSS3), so as long as you have a reasonably current browser, you're ready to go.

How many times can I use the tools?

Unlimited! There are no daily limits, monthly caps, or usage restrictions. You can process as many PDF files as you need, whenever you need them—whether that's 5 files a day or 500.

We don't track your usage or impose artificial limitations to push you toward paid plans because there are no paid plans. Use our tools as much as you need.

Can I use PDF Tools for commercial purposes?

Yes! You're free to use PDF Tools for both personal and commercial purposes. Whether you're merging contracts for your business, adding signatures to client agreements, or compressing marketing materials, our tools are available for all your needs.

There are no licensing fees or commercial restrictions. The only requirement is that you comply with our basic Terms of Service (essentially: use the tools legally and ethically).

What languages are supported?

Currently, PDF Tools supports English and Hebrew, with full right-to-left (RTL) layout support for Hebrew users. We're actively working on adding more languages including Spanish, French, German, and others.

The language preference is automatically detected based on your browser settings, but you can easily switch languages using the language selector in the header.

Privacy & Security

Are my PDF files secure and private?

Completely. All PDF processing happens locally in your browser using JavaScript. Your files never leave your device and are never uploaded to our servers or any third-party services. This ensures total privacy and security for your sensitive documents.

When you process a PDF:

  • The file stays in your browser's memory
  • Processing happens using client-side libraries (PDF-lib, PDF.js)
  • The processed file is generated locally
  • You download it directly from your browser
  • No network transmission of file content occurs

This architecture makes PDF Tools ideal for sensitive documents like contracts, financial records, medical files, and confidential business materials.

Do you store or log my files?

No, never. Since all processing happens in your browser, your files never reach our servers in the first place. We have no way to access, store, or log your documents because they simply don't pass through our infrastructure.

The only data we collect is basic analytics (page views, browser types) to improve our service. We don't track individual users, file names, file contents, or any document metadata.

Can I use PDF Tools offline?

Partially. Once you've loaded a tool page while online, you can continue using it even if your internet connection drops because all the processing code is already in your browser.

However, you'll need an internet connection to initially load the page. We're working on adding Progressive Web App (PWA) functionality that will allow you to install PDF Tools for full offline access.

What data do you collect?

We collect minimal analytics data to improve our service:

  • Page views: Which tools are most popular
  • Browser types: To ensure compatibility
  • General location: Country-level only (not specific addresses)
  • Error reports: To fix bugs and improve reliability

We DO NOT collect:

  • Your PDF files or their contents
  • File names or metadata
  • Personal identifying information
  • Browsing history outside our site
  • Login credentials (we don't have accounts)
Is it safe to use PDF Tools for confidential documents?

Yes! Because all processing happens locally in your browser, PDF Tools is actually safer for confidential documents than tools that upload files to remote servers.

Many professionals use PDF Tools for sensitive materials including:

  • Legal contracts and agreements
  • Medical records and patient information
  • Financial statements and tax documents
  • Proprietary business plans and strategies
  • Personal identification documents

Just remember to close the browser tab when you're done to clear the files from browser memory.

PDF Tools Features

How many PDFs can I merge at once?

There's no hard limit on the number of PDFs you can merge. The practical limit depends on your device's available memory. Most modern computers can easily merge 50-100+ PDF files in one operation.

For very large merge operations (hundreds of files or files totaling several gigabytes), you may want to merge in smaller batches to avoid browser memory issues.

Are digital signatures created by your tool legally binding?

Yes, in most jurisdictions. Our PDF Signature tool creates electronic signatures that are legally valid under laws like the U.S. ESIGN Act and the EU's eIDAS regulation, which grant electronic signatures the same legal standing as handwritten signatures.

However, legal requirements vary by:

  • Jurisdiction: Different countries have different rules
  • Document type: Some documents (like wills) may require specific signature types
  • Industry: Regulated industries may have additional requirements

For high-stakes legal documents, we recommend consulting with a legal professional about signature requirements in your specific situation. For more information, read our comprehensive guide on legally binding digital signatures.

How much can I compress a PDF?

Compression results vary based on your PDF's content, but typical results are:

  • Low compression: 10-30% size reduction, maximum quality
  • Medium compression: 40-60% size reduction, excellent quality
  • High compression: 70-90% size reduction, good quality

PDFs with many high-resolution images compress more than text-only documents. Scanned documents typically offer the best compression ratios.

Learn more in our guide: How to Reduce PDF File Size Without Losing Quality.

Can I split a PDF into individual pages?

Yes! Our PDF Splitter allows you to extract specific pages or page ranges from your PDF documents. You can:

  • Extract individual pages (e.g., page 5)
  • Extract page ranges (e.g., pages 10-25)
  • Extract multiple non-consecutive pages (e.g., pages 1, 5, 10)
  • Create multiple separate PDFs from different page selections

This is perfect for extracting chapters from books, specific sections from reports, or isolating particular pages from lengthy documents.

Can I reorder pages when merging PDFs?

Absolutely! Our PDF Merger includes a drag-and-drop interface that lets you reorder files before merging. Each file is numbered showing its position in the final merged PDF, and you can drag files up or down to change the order.

This makes it easy to organize documents in the exact sequence you need—for example, arranging contract pages in the correct order or organizing reports chronologically.

Will compressing my PDF reduce quality?

Modern compression algorithms are very smart about maintaining quality:

  • Text: Remains perfectly crisp at all compression levels
  • Images: May show slight quality reduction at high compression, but generally remains very readable
  • Graphics: Vector graphics maintain quality; raster graphics compress similar to images

For most business documents, even high compression maintains excellent readability. If you're working with important presentations or marketing materials where image quality is critical, choose low or medium compression.

You can always test different compression levels and compare the results before settling on your preferred option.

Can I add multiple signatures to one PDF?

Yes! You can add multiple signatures to a single PDF document. This is useful for:

  • Multi-page contracts requiring signatures on each page
  • Documents with multiple signature fields
  • Adding both signatures and initials
  • Documents requiring witnesses or co-signers

Simply create your signature once, then click on the PDF wherever you want to place it. You can also create different signatures (e.g., full signature vs. initials) for different purposes.

Technical Questions

What browsers are supported?

PDF Tools works on all modern browsers including:

  • Google Chrome: Version 90+ (recommended)
  • Mozilla Firefox: Version 88+
  • Safari: Version 14+
  • Microsoft Edge: Version 90+
  • Opera: Version 76+
  • Brave: Current versions

We recommend using the latest version of your browser for the best performance and security. Mobile browsers (iOS Safari, Chrome Mobile, Firefox Mobile) are also supported.

Is there a file size limit?

There are no artificial file size limits imposed by PDF Tools. The only limitation is your device's available memory (RAM). Here are general guidelines:

  • 4GB RAM device: Can handle PDFs up to ~100-200 MB comfortably
  • 8GB RAM device: Can process PDFs up to ~500 MB - 1 GB
  • 16GB+ RAM device: Can handle very large PDFs (1+ GB)

If you encounter memory issues with very large files, try:

  • Closing other browser tabs and applications
  • Processing files in smaller batches
  • Using high compression to reduce memory usage
Why does processing take longer for some PDFs?

Processing time depends on several factors:

  • File size: Larger files take longer to process
  • Page count: More pages require more processing
  • Content complexity: PDFs with many images, fonts, or complex layouts take longer
  • Device performance: Faster processors complete operations quicker
  • Operation type: Compression is more CPU-intensive than merging

Most operations complete in seconds, but very large or complex PDFs may take a minute or two. Our tools show progress indicators so you know processing is ongoing.

Can I use PDF Tools on mobile devices?

Yes! PDF Tools is fully responsive and works on smartphones and tablets. The interface adapts to smaller screens, and all functionality is available on mobile devices.

Mobile-specific features include:

  • Touch-optimized signature drawing
  • Responsive layouts for easy navigation
  • File selection from device storage or cloud services
  • Direct download to your device

Note that very large PDFs may be challenging on devices with limited RAM. For best mobile experience, we recommend files under 50MB.

What PDF features are supported?

Our tools support standard PDF features including:

  • Text content: All text is preserved and remains searchable
  • Images: Embedded images in all common formats (JPEG, PNG, etc.)
  • Fonts: Embedded and system fonts
  • Links and bookmarks: Internal and external hyperlinks
  • Metadata: Document properties and information
  • Annotations: Comments and markup (preserved during processing)

Advanced features like forms, JavaScript, and encryption are partially supported depending on the specific operation.

Can I process password-protected PDFs?

Currently, PDF Tools requires PDFs to be unlocked before processing. If you have a password-protected PDF:

  • You'll need the password to open it first
  • Use Adobe Acrobat or another PDF tool to remove the password protection
  • Then process the unlocked PDF with our tools

We're working on adding support for password-protected files where you can provide the password during processing. This feature will be added in a future update.

What if I encounter an error?

If you experience issues, try these troubleshooting steps:

  • Refresh the page: Clear browser cache and reload
  • Update your browser: Ensure you're using the latest version
  • Try a different browser: Some PDFs work better in specific browsers
  • Check your file: Ensure the PDF isn't corrupted or password-protected
  • Reduce file size: Try with a smaller or simpler PDF
  • Close other applications: Free up system memory

If problems persist, please contact us at support@pdftoolboxfree.com with details about the error, your browser, and the operation you were attempting.
